It was quite a fall season for the athletes of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League--and not just on the athletic fields and courts. The athletes of the SCVAL also did quite well in the classroom in the fall of 1996.
Lynbrook, Cupertino, Saratoga, Monta Vista, Fremont and Homestead were among the SCVAL schools with teams finishing among the leaders in the Central Coast Section Fall Scholastic championships.
The Lynbrook girls' volleyball team topped the list of local finishers. The Vikings finished first in the scholastic competition in their sport with an impressive cumulative grade point average of 3.6363.
The CCS presented the Vikings with a team trophy and individual certificates for claiming the scholar-athlete award.
The Lynbrook girls' tennis team also finished strong in the fall competition. The Vikes wrapped up the season with a 3.6060 cumulative GPA to finish sixth in the CCS.
Saratoga had four teams finish the fall campaign among the GPA leaders in the section.
Not only did the Saratoga football team win the CCS Division IV championship this season, but the Falcons also finished among the scholastic leaders in the section. Saratoga's football players teamed for a 2.9950 grade point average to finish fifth in the CCS.
The Saratoga girls' field hockey team ended up fifth overall with a 3.3520 grade point, and the Falcons were fifth in girls' volleyball at 3.5120. Saratoga was also sixth in boys' cross country with a 3.4740 grade point average.
Monta Vista finished second overall in two different sports. The Matadors were second in girls' hockey with a 3.5050 combined grade point, and the Mats were second in girls' water polo at 3.5300.
Monta Vista added a fifth-place finish in girls' tennis with a 3.6150 grade point.
Fremont ended up third in both girls' field hockey at 3.4550 and girls' tennis at 3.7188
Homestead was fourth in girls' field hockey at 3.4509 and Cupertino was fifth in boys' cross country at 3.4790.
Los Altos was another SCVAL team to win a CCS scholastic title with a 3.5758 grade point average in girls' field hockey.
The Eagles placed in two other sports and Mountain View had a pair of teams rank among the CCS leaders to give the SCVAL an impressive representation in the section's scholastic standings.
