    Spartan baseball dinner

Dave Righetti will be the guest speaker on Jan. 18, 6-9 p.m., when the San Jose State University baseball team hosts its "First Pitch Dinner" at The Three Flames Restaurant, 1547 Meridian in San Jose.

Righetti, the former Pioneer and San Jose City College star who went on to play for the New York Yankees and other big league clubs, is currently the pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants.

Along with the guest speaker, the night will also provide an opportunity to meet the 2002 Spartans and there will be information on the coming season, the booster club and season tickets.

The cost of the dinner is $35 and the reservation deadline is Jan. 11. For more information, call 408.924.1467.

    Little League tryouts

The Saratoga Little League will hold tryouts for the 2002 season on Jan. 5 and 6. Since Congress Springs field is not ready, tryouts will be held at Rolling Hills Middle School, 1585 More Ave. off Pollard Road in Los Gatos. In case of rain, make-up dates are Jan. 12 and 13 at Rolling Hills.

For more information, call the Saratoga baseball hotline at 408.794.0279.

    Golf for the Broncos

Mark O'Brien will pull on the uniform as the new head baseball coach at Santa Clara University this spring. But before he does, he'll be meeting and greeting baseball boosters in the Santa Clara University Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament on Jan. 25 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.

The tourney features an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start and will be followed by a dinner, auction and raffle. The registration fee is $200 before Jan. 11 and $215 after Jan. 11. The fees include cart, green fees, range balls, tee prizes, lunch and dinner (cost for the dinner only is $50).

The field in the best ball scramble tourney is limited to 144 golfers.

For more information, contact Mike Oakland at 408.554.4882 or JMOakland@scu.edu, or Tom Myers at 408.554.5267 or TGMyers@scu.edu.

    Pop Warner registration

The Los Gatos Pop Warner football organization is currently holding online registration for players and cheerleaders. Last year teams filled up quickly, so interested boys and girls ages 7-15 are encouraged to register early.

The season begins in August of 2002. Signup information is available at www.lgpw.com or call the organization's hotline at 408.920.2204.
