    Local musicians sought for Young Artist Awards

    The San Jose Music Study Club is now accepting applications for its 48th annual Young Artist Awards. a competition open to vocalists, pianists and instrumentalists who are well-versed in classical repertoire and are between the ages of 18 and 30 as of the audition date. Auditions take place Feb. 11, throughout the afternoon at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, in Los Altos.

    Applicants, who are also responsible for bringing their own accompanist, must perform their audition piece from memory. Applicants will also be asked to perform one or more of the other pieces in the repertoire they included when submitting their application forms. Each audition runs approximately 15 minutes.

    The San Jose Music Study Club suggests the following as guidelines for applicants when selecting their repertoire:

    * For vocalists: at least one operatic aria or oratorio; a selection from German lieder or French chansons; an Italian or English art song; and the work of a contemporary composer.

    * For pianists: works from the baroque, classical and romantic periods, and work from a contemporary composer.

    * For instrumentalists: a portion of a sonata; a selection from the standard repertoire of the masters; and a composition by a contemporary composer.

    First- second- and third-place winners receive $700, $500 and $300, respectively. They will also perform in concert on April 18, at Church of the Valley, 400 N. Winchester Blvd., in Santa Clara.
