    The Foothill Club hosts professional mountain climber

    The Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes professional mountaineer Jim Williams to speak at the third program of its 2000-2001 Public Lecture Series on Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. Williams, whose program is titled Adventures on the Seven Highest Summits, was the climbing leader for the Inventa Everest 2000 Environmental Expedition. He is also a geologist, polar expert and founder/president of Professional Mountain Guides in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

    The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, at 20399 Park Place. Admission is a $6 donation. Call 408.354.2527 or 408.867.2361.

    Gallery Saratoga exhibit takes cue from the weather

    From Jan. 2 through Feb. 1, the member artists of Gallery Saratoga have pooled their talents to produce "It's a Marshmallow World," a group exhibition that features a variety of winter-themed scenes. Along with the snowy show, paintings in all media, photography, jewelry, pottery, silk scarves, greeting cards and other original handmade art are also on display.

    Gallery Saratoga is at 14531 Big Basin Way, Unit 3; the entrance is off Fourth Street. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Art group hosts local watercolor artist at meeting

    The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites all interested members of the community to attend its Jan. 18 meeting, at which time award-winning watercolorist Ferenc Besze will give a demonstration on his techniques. Besze, a native of Hungary, paints a variety of subjects and themes in a loose impressionistic style with flowing brush strokes and a limited palette. He enjoys teaching art both locally and out of state, and has exhibited in various Bay Area venues.

    The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. Refreshments will be served. The SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' works and occasionally paint together.
