Speed limits changing on local thoroughfares

By Clarence Cromwell

Speed limits will get slight adjustments on two local roads when an ordinance introduced Dec. 20 by the Saratoga City Council goes into effect this year.

On Saratoga Avenue between Fruitvale and Cox avenues, the speed limit will decrease from 45 mph to 40 mph. The limits on two parts of Quito Road will increase from 25 mph to 30 mph. That goes for the stretch between Pollard Road and Allendale Avenue and the area between the southern city limits and San Tomas Aquino Creek, south of Bicknell Road.

The new speeds are the result of a speed survey conducted by Traffic Data Service of Campbell.

The city must survey speeds every five years in areas where officers use radar guns. If officers are to continue using radar, the city must set speed limits at 85 percent of the average speed cars travel on the road.

The City Council is expected to adopt the ordinance Jan. 3. It would then go into effect 30 days after its adoption.
