Council tells Mitsubishi to stop Mexico project
Councilwoman Ann Waltonsmith on Dec. 1 asked the City Council to take a stand against manufacturing giant Mitsubishi Corp. for what she believes is a threat to the California Gray Whale.
The company is building a mammoth salt factory in Mexico's Laguna San Ignacio, and the project will cause many species, including the California Gray Whale, to lose their breeding ground, she said. Waltonsmith said she knew hers was an unusual request, but that the more people and representative bodies to become involved with the campaign, the better the chance of catching the attention of Mitsubishi.
The Council adopted a resolution Dec. 15, asking Mitsubishi to stop the project, and directed city staff to look into any dealings the city may have with the company.
