House catches fire on Christmas night

Fire marred Christmas evening festivities at a Saratoga home at 20107 Mendelsohn Lane. Saratoga Fire Department officials said the fire broke out at a little after 11 p.m. in a second-story room of the home, and they believe it may have been started by a candle. An alarm system at the home and connected to the fire house alerted the department. Two engines and a rescue unit responded to the blaze, which was contained in a single room located next to the family's children's room. "Their fire alarm system saved them," firefighter Beau Rahn said.

Used book store posts new hours

The Book-Go-Round offers new hours for the new year. The used book store, run by the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries, will be open from noon to 5 p.m., Sundays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

As a result of the new schedule, the Book-Go-Round, in operation for almost 15 years, could use more volunteers. Residents interested in helping out can drop by the store, located on the corner of Oak Street and Los Gatos-Saratoga Road, or call 867-5552.

Proceeds fund book-buying and programs at the Saratoga Community Library.

The LWV holds special meetings

The League of Women Voters of Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno has scheduled a special meeting at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, in the Galleria Conference Room of The Terraces. The league is expected to review its goals and consider what the league should be doing now. A board meeting will follow, at which all league members are welcome.

The Terraces is located at 800 Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos. For more information, call 356-4460.

The league will also hold a discussion on the long and complex legacy of 25 years of Roe v. Wade, and the present state of a woman's right to choose, at its general meeting January 28.

Dale Hill will speak on the league's position on reproductive rights, and Bay Area pro-choice activist Barbara Ellis will give a presentation.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Rouse Assembly Hall at The Terraces.

For more information, call 888-870-VOTE (8683).
