Concert Association presents opera singer

The Saratoga-Los Gatos Community Concert Association presents Bridget Hooks on Sun., Jan. 12, at 2:30 p.m. in the Prentiss Brown Auditorium at Los Gatos High School.

Hooks is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and earned her master's degree from the Curtis Institute of Music.

The program will include operatic arias from works by Wagner, Verdi and Mozart. Also included are a group of songs by Rachmaninoff that Hooks sang in San Francisco in 1993 as part of the San Francisco Symphony's Russian Festival. She has given many concerts in Europe and throughout the United States and has appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra and the National Symphony and at Lincoln and Kennedy centers. Global competition is topic for the League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno meets Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. to hear Larry Kummer, a certified financial analyst, discuss global competition in the world economy.

Kummer, who works for Paine Webber in Walnut Creek, will discuss how global competition affects the United States and the challenges that lie ahead. His talk is set for the West Valley College Library, Fruitvale and Allendale avenues.

The topic for unit discussion in January is the juvenile justice system. Meetings are Jan. 14 at 9:30 a.m. at the home of Lora Lee Moncrieff, 18190 Bancroft Ave., and Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of new president Tat Blesch, 13574 Old Tree Way.
