This eucalyptus tree survived for more than 100 years, including a long battle over whether it should be removed to make way for construction projects at Saratoga Elementary School. But when a recent storm took down a younger eucalyptus on the campus, the board agreed with concerned parents that safety considerations required the removal of the older tree. On Dec. 21, a group gathered to honor the old trooper with poetry, song, memories and even a little eucalyptus honey. On Jan. 3, a tree removal team carried out the deed--although workers at the site said they would be leaving about 12 feet of the tree's base intact.
