League starts, but Weger keep scoring, Falcons keep winning
Season looks as good as preseason
By Dick Sparrer
Micah Weger has been pumping in the points all through the preseason, and the Saratoga Falcons have been winning basketball games.
So why should anything change this week just because the Falcons are beginning play in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League?
Well, things didn't change.
Weger pitched in 22 points to lead the Falcons to a 56-51 win over Fremont in the league opener for each club.
Weger had a three-pointer among his six field goals and buried nine shots from the free-throw line to lead all scorers in the game.
Mike Crosby and A.J. Peper each joined Weger in double figures for the Falcons with 10 points apiece.
Scott Snider had a three among his five points, Jesse Alejandro hit three points, and Bill Wallace, Todd Anderson and Alan Tsai added two points each in the win.
The Falcons, 15-1 for the year, jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the first period and held a six-point lead at the half, 33-27. Saratoga added to its lead by four in the third quarter, then held on in the fourth to clinch the win.
In other local boys basketball action last week, Prospect and Westmont each split in the first week of league play.
Prospect opened the season with a 46-36 win over Santa Teresa, but then lost 50-44 to Overfelt to slip to 1-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Zak Diriya poured in 20 points, including a couple of threes, to lead the Panthers past the Saints. Chad Holan finished in double digits with 10 points in the win.
Slaven Moro, Mike Stephens and John Miner added four points each for the Panthers, and Mike Senteio, David Najima and Kelley Stevens hit two each.
The Panthers slipped to 10-7 for the year with the six-point loss to the Royals later in the week.
Holan had the hot hand for Prospect, hitting 18 points. Senteio finished with seven points, and Stephens hit six, each one hitting a three.
Stephen Juran added four points, Stevens, Ryan Sainsbury and Sal Washington three each and Moro two.
The Warriors started the year off with a win in the West Valley Division of the BVAL, beating Lincoln 50-45. But Westmont lost 60-57 to Leland in overtime last Friday night.
Caleb Pitts had a big night with 23 points, but the Warriors lost to Leland in OT. Daniel Sherburne supported with 14 points, and Vincent Chung hit 10. All three players dropped three-pointers.
Erik Cisler added six points, and Clay Tolbert and Todd Bethke hit two apiece for the Warriors.
Westmont, 8-9 for the year and 1-1 in league, had opened the season with the five-point win over Lincoln.
Pitts topped Westmont with 15 points, and Sherburne and Cisler canned 12 apiece. Cisler hit a pair of threes in the win.
Tolbert netted five points, Bethke four and Chung two.
In girls basketball action, Saratoga split in the first week of the El Camino Division season. The Falcons topped Los Altos 49-44, but lost to Los Gatos 56-43 later in the week.
Nicole LaMore buried 16 points, including a couple of threes, but the Falcons lost by 13 to the Wildcats. Dernie Wang had a three among her nine points.
Lamore had bombed 20 points to lead the Falcons to the win over the Eagles.
Westmont two-timed Presentation and Leland to get off to a 2-0 start in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.
The Warriors, 9-2 for the year, beat the Panthers 49-32 and came back to whip Leland 38-33.
Sheryl Mahaffey popped three three-pointers enroute to a 15-point night in the win over the Chargers. Mia Simmons supported with nine points, Jenny Brown had five, Alyssa Parsons four, Kim Castillo and Jennifer Brownridge two apiece and Gina Kottikas one.
Parsons poured in 17 points to lead the Warriors to the win over Presentation. Simmons joined her in double figures with 12 points, Mahaffey had eight, Zuleeka Mohamed seven, Kottikas and Veronica Sifuentez two each and Castillo one.
