Old potholes better than the new repairs

Two streets that I frequent--Saratoga Avenue between Cox and Prospect, and Pierce Road for the first mile off Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road--have had recent asphalt repairs. Who did this work? The Alfred E. Newman Asphalt Co.?

I would rather have the old potholes than these "lumps" of asphalt called repairs. Is this a city repair or a contracted company? Haven't they heard of a steamroller or whatever you call those big machines?

Appointments make sense for the council

This is in response to a letter in the Jan. 5 issue of the Saratoga News from Marcia Kaplan, the former chairman of Saratoga's Planning Commission (which she pointedly chose not publicize in her letter), regarding recent appointments made by our City Council members.

Firstly, she accuses our current council members of controlling our city. Our elected council members have sworn to represent, not control our residents.

Secondly, elected officials usually have access to information that we voters do not (frequently because we don't take advantage of the information available to us). Therefore, one should assume that the council has good reasons for its appointments and decisions.

Thirdly, I would remind Saratogans that Ms. Kaplan espouses a minority point of view that is in conflict with the majority of our voters' view; i.e., she is pro-development, and voters rejected that point of view in two recent elections.

Fourthly, I propose that she is positioning herself for a run for the City Council in the upcoming elections.

A related aside: Ms. Kaplan assumes family members always agree on issues and that the two new appointments on the Parks and Recreations Department would never disagree. To that, I say, "Get real, Ms. Kaplan!"
