    Camera Club offers program on Australia

    Saratogan Doug Cheeseman, of Cheeseman's Ecology Safaris, is the guest speaker at this month's meeting of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Camera Club. On Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m., Cheeseman presents a photography and travel-related program on Australia in the youth center of the Los Gatos Presbyterian Church, 16575 Shannon Road. Admission is free.     Montalvo poetry, art events take place on same day

    The winning poets of Villa Montalvo's 1999 Biennial Poetry Competition will read their award-winning poems during a free event Jan. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Carriage House Theatre, 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga.

    Poets from California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada submitted more than 250 submissions for the competition, whose grand prize was $1,000 and a one-month artist residency at Montalvo. Los Gatan Parthenia Hicks earned first place for her Firewalk poem trio. The second- and third-place winners, Dawn McGuire of Berkeley and Edward Smallfield of Albany, earned $500 and $300, respectively.

    Eight individuals also earned honorable mentions: Tina Chang of San Francisco, Valerie Coulton of Berkeley, Carrie Etter of Irvine, Lise Goett of Los Altos Hills, Phyllis Koestenbaum of Sunnyvale, Doug MacPherson of San Francisco, Mark McKain of Sherman Oaks and Michael Spence of Tukwila, Wash. The competition's judge was poet and writer Denise Duhamel. Call 408.961.5818 for more information about the poetry event.

    Also on Jan. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Gallery at Montalvo hosts an opening reception for artist Mirang Wonne, whose Floating Rocks exhibit opens that day. The installation consists of rocks and boulders of various sizes made from metals, paper collage and painting. The exhibit runs through Feb. 20. Regular Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibit, call 408.961.5813.
