Saratoga NewsLettersCampbell is no moderate To those requesting clarification regarding my recent letter concerning Tom Campbell (but who did not leave their phone numbers or addresses so that I could respond): Campbell's vote for impeachment was not the reason I concluded he was no longer a moderate. I could understand his unhappiness with the President. But as late as Dec. 8, his letters to his constituents named six areas in the Clinton investigation he thought deserved further inquiry, including two items that Chairman Hyde's Judicial Committee had already scrapped as dry wells (Whitewater and campaign finance). Meantime, Campbell kept saying he "wanted the whole thing to be over with." The letters he sent explaining his position certainly did not sound as though he wanted the whole thing over with. A clue to his persistence could be found in the Mercury News on Dec. 20 (immediately following the impeachment vote). Campbell lumped Clinton together with Nixon and Johnson as "imperial presidents." (The phrase does not really seem to apply to Clinton, whose power base in Washington and in his own party has always been shaky). In the future, Campbell said, he would like to see the balance of power tilted in favor of Congress, with less authority for the chief executive. Though he may not share much of the far right's political dogma, Campbell does share some of their objectives. That is why I no longer think of him as a moderate.
Alan Rosenus DeCinzo cartoon is at odds with article Why do you continue to provide a platform for the truly obnoxious DeCinzo cartoons? They generally take the form of juvenile sarcasm, probably the lowest, most hurtful form of humor. This is the kind of humor used by children and adolescents until (some) learn to engage in more positive, constructive commentary. The cartoon in the Jan. 6 issue of the Saratoga News is a glaring example. DeCinzo totally contradicts the Steve Enders article, which gives the impression that Chris Constantin is doing a fine job as president of the West Valley- Mission College Board of Trustees. The cartoon also contradicts the words of Don Wolfe, who apparently also thinks Chris is doing a good job. I am at a loss to understand why the Saratoga News allows such unedited, unchecked material to appear in the paper that services what I thought was a relatively mature, professional, and forward-looking community. I realize cartoons "do not necessarily reflect the editorial opinion of the Saratoga News," but I do think you need to pay attention to a modicum of good taste.
