Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsOil painter speaks at artists' meeting The Saratoga Community of Artists invites everyone interested in art to attend its Jan. 14 meeting, which takes place at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. South Bay artist and art instructor Mike Linstrom offers a demonstration of his oil-painting techniques. The SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' work and occasionally paint together. Speechreading classes in Saratoga and Los Gatos A series of speechreading--also known as lipreading--classes gets underway Jan. 19 and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays through the end of May. Marcia Fariss, a clinical audiologist, is the instructor. These classes are designed to improve word understanding through techniques useful to both hearing-aid users and non-users. Among the topics are visual cues, manipulation of the listening environment, hearing loss, assistive listening devices and how to get the most out of a hearing aid. Classes take place at the Saratoga Senior Center and at the Jewish Community Center in Los Gatos. Class size is limited. West Valley holds auditions Teenagers through senior citizens are invited to try out for roles in two upcoming theatrical productions at West Valley College, 15400 Fruitvale Ave. The Spring One-Act Festival, which runs in the campus' Chamber Theatre in mid- to late-March, has roles for more than 20 actors of both genders and all ages. Roles for 12 males and six females are also available in William Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors, set for a late April and early May run. Cold-reading auditions for both shows take place Jan. 25 and 26 from 7 to 10 p.m. Callbacks are Jan. 27 and 28, beginning at 7 p.m. Individuals interested in technical theater work can pick up packets and register on either audition day.
