Saratoga NewsHello? Is anyone there?Residents calling City Hall may have found themselves listening to the ringing--and ringing and ringing--of the city's main phone line. But City Manager Larry Perlin said he wasn't aware of any problem with the phone system, although he did admit that staffing sometimes is a problem. With last year's reorganization and reduction in staff, Perlin pointed out, finding someone available to cover the phones when the receptionist takes a break or is out is sometimes a challenge. "We do have a problem with backup coverage at the switchboard," he said. "But if you call, the system should still dump you into the voicemail system, and you should have the choice of dialing an extension or dialing a person's name." Last week, a temporary failure in the voicemail system left staffers getting and taking messages the old-fashioned way--on paper. City officials said the problems, short-lived and minor, had been fixed.
