"The Poet's Tool Box" by Sas Colby is a mixed-media assemblage in a painted wood box.
Five Villa Montalvo artists in residence showcase their work during Open Studios on Sunday, Jan. 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the historic estate for the arts located off Highway 9.
Participating will be Sas Colby, a multimedia artist; Daniel Raffin, a visual artist; Laura Marello, writer; Liz Waldner, poet; and Yuki Morimoto, composer and conductor.
Colby, best known for experimental work and alternative art forms, will be working on new paintings while in residence at Montalvo. She lives in Taos, N.M.
Raffin recently received his M.F.A. from the University of Colorado. While at Montalvo, he plans to work with photographic projections on liquids.
Marello has written three novels and a collection of novellas and stories. She is the recipient of an NEA Fellowship and a Stegner Fellowship. She is from Albany, N.Y., and plans to work on a new novel.
Walder is on the creative writing faculty at Tufts University and teaches at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her poetry collection, Saving the Appearances,was a National Poetry Series finalist in 1995 and 1996. Waldner plans to complete a new poetry collection.
Yuki Morimoto, a composer and conductor living in Vienna, Austria, has developed a compositional repertoire that extends from solo pieces to chamber music and orchestral works. Morimoto plans to compose a new orchestral piece during his residency.
Studios of the visual artists, Colby and Raffin, will be open to the public from 2 to 3 p.m. From 3 to 4 p.m., novelist Maurello and poet Walder will read from their works in the main villa, and composer Morimoto will present an example of his work. A reception will follow from 4 to 5 p.m.
