Artworks screened for 40th Rotary show

Art works for the 40th Saratoga Rotary Art Show will be screened Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at West Valley College.

Paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, fiber arts and crafts will be judged by Lissa Jones, a corporate art consultant; Charles Escott, an art instructor and expert in handmade paper and jewelry design; and Carl Hutchinson of Saratoga, a professional artist specializing in oil painting.

The Rotary Art Show is always held on the first Sunday in May. This year the date falls on May 4. It is the largest one-day art show east of the Mississippi, according to artist coordinator Mary Fleischli.

Proceeds from the event are returned to the community. Recipients have included Saratoga High School, Montalvo Center for the Arts, Saratoga Senior Center, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. For information and screening applications, call Fleischli at 725-2434.

Zlotnick represents city on water board

Greg Zlotnick of Palo Alto, a former water-policy analyst for the state Department of Fish and Game, was seated Jan. 7 as director of the Santa Clara Water District's 5th district, replacing retiring board member James Lenin.

Zlotnick, 33, was elected in November 1997 to represent voters from Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Cupertino, Saratoga and portions of San Jose and Sunnyvale.

Simitian sworn in as supervisor

Former Palo Alto Mayor Joe Simitian was sworn in Jan. 13 as a member of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Simitian, who will replace retiring supervisor Dianne McKenna, was elected Nov. 5 to represent the 5th Supervisorial District, which includes Saratoga, San Jose, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, Mountain View and Palo Alto.

Simitian defeated former Cupertino Mayor Barbara Koppel to win the seat.

Cunneen named legislator of year

The Faculty Association of California Community Colleges will honor state Assemblymember Jim Cunneen as their "First-Term Legislator of the Year" at a Feb. 28 FACC conference in San Francisco

FACC praised Cunneen for leadership in legislating tax incentives for college students and for helping the association author legislation.
