    Young Giants need homes

Signing a professional baseball contract is an exciting experience for any young man. But the early years of his career can be difficult and lonely.

Many of the players--most of them in their late teens and early 20s--find themselves away from home for the first time.

That's why the San Jose Giants, a Class A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, looks for local families to take in their players each season.

The search is currently on for host families for the 2002 season, which runs April through August. Linda Pereira of the Giants needs to find enough families for the players by early March.

Host families provide a player with a room, and the Giants provide season tickets and parking passes for all of the club's games at San Jose Municipal Stadium. The team also hosts picnics for the families and sponsors an annual trip to a San Francisco Giants game at Pac Bell Park.

For more information, call Pereira, 408.297.1435, ext. 19.

    Golf Tourney for the Broncos

Mark O'Brien will pull on the uniform as the new head baseball coach at Santa Clara University this spring. But before he does, he'll be meeting and greeting baseball boosters in the Santa Clara University Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament on Jan. 25 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.

The tourney features an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start and will be followed by a dinner, auction and raffle. The registration fee is $215 and includes cart, green fees, range balls, tee prizes, lunch and dinner. (Cost for the dinner only is $50).

The field in the best ball scramble tourney is limited to 144 golfers.

For more information, contact Mike Oakland at 408.554.4882 or JMOakland@scu.edu, or Tom Myers at 408.554.5267 or TGMyers@scu.edu.

    Pop Warner registration

The Los Gatos Pop Warner football organization is currently holding online registration for players and cheerleaders. Last year teams filled up quickly, so interested boys and girls ages 7-15 are encouraged to register early.

The season begins in August of 2002. Signup information is available at www.lgpw.com, or the organization's hotline at 408.920.2204.
