Rainy Day Blues

If there was any doubt that parents dropping off children and picking them up from schools creates traffic jams, last week's rain offered a textbook example of the problem. This was the scene on Jan. 11, when cars began lining up on Fruitvale Avenue to await the end of the day at Redwood Middle School. The heavens don't have to open up for the long lines to appear, either. That's why representatives from the sheriff's office and Saratoga schools formed the Saratoga Schools Transportation Task Force last fall with the city--including the public safety commission--and representatives from the Valley Transit Authority, and Fehr and Peers Associates to look for solutions that will reduce traffic congestion around the schools.

Citizens begin investigating

About a dozen Saratoga citizens and some Saratoga Fire District firefighters visited the Santa Clara County Fire Department headquarters at 14700 Winchester Blvd. in Los Gatos on Jan. 6, so that the citizens could find out more about the county fire department. Chief Douglas Sporleder (above) gave a presentation on the department and spoke about its business plan and the costs and service levels with the cities that the department serves. Saratogans who visited the station were specifically interested in how the county department operates because of the push by union firefighters in the SFD to become part of the county department. Sporleder did say however that the department routinely makes such a presentation for any group that asks.
