Warriors drop two heartbreakers

Velasco's 28 points not enough

By Dick Sparrer

Lynée Velasco had a big week for the Westmont girls' basketball team.

The 5-foot-9 senior center pumped in 28 points in two games to lead all scorers for the Warriors.

It wasn't enough, however, to lead the Westmont girls to a victory.

The Warriors suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses to slip to 2-2 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Westmont lost 41-34 to Willow Glen to open the week, then lost to Leigh 50-47 in overtime.

Each time the Warriors battled from behind, but each time they were outscored in the final period and that led to the two defeats.

Westmont trailed Willow Glen 20-16 at intermission, but topped the Rams 10-6 in the third to go into the fourth quarter tied 26-26. Willow Glen outscored Westmont 15-8 in the fourth, though, to win by seven.

Velasco pumped in 11 points to lead all Westmont scorers. Melissa Newberg, a 5-foot-10 sophomore forward, supported with nine points, including a pair of three-point buckets, and Melissa Taylor added six. Courtney Makishima hit four points for the Warriors and Lauren Costanzo and Tiffany Reinblein had two apiece.

Velasco came back with 17 points against Leigh, but Westmont lost in overtime.

The Warriors trailed 23-19 at the break in this one, but fought back to top the Longhorns 18-8 in the third to lead by six heading into the fourth, 37-31. Leigh topped Westmont 12-6 in the final period to tie it 43-43, then outscored the Warriors 7-4 in overtime to win it.

Taylor joined Velasco in double digits with 10 points and Newberg added eight. Costanzo and Reiblein tossed in five points apiece and Makishima had two.
