Greenbelt Alliance plans Bear Creek hike

The Greenbelt Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation, urban planning and raising awareness about open space and greenbelts, has organized a variety of free Greenbelt Outings this winter in eight Northern California counties.

Closest to Saratoga is "Friends of Bear Creek," which takes place Jan. 24 in the Santa Cruz mountains above Los Gatos. Hikers meet at 10 a.m. to hike six miles over a 900-foot elevation to reach Priest Rock. From there, they can view the proposed site of the Bear Creek Redwoods Preserve. Greenbelt hike leaders will also provide information about local efforts to preserve the Bear Creek area.

Saratoga Foothill Club hosts economics speaker

Dr. Mario Belotti, Santa Clara University's W.M. Keck Foundation professor of economics, speaks on "The Economic Forecast" on Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. at the Saratoga Foothill Club's clubhouse, 20399 Park Place.

Belotti has been on the SCU faculty since 1959 and has served as chairman of the economics department and as director of the Institute of Agribusiness. His fields of interest are macroeconomic theory, monetary theory and policy and economic development. He has also served as an economic consultant in several developing countries.

Youth Science Institute offers children's classes

The Youth Science Institute offers weekly hands-on science and nature activities, experiments, stories, crafts and nature walks for children from preschool age through third grade; programs are specially tailored for different age groups. Program topics include animals, plants, chemistry, physics and geology.

This YSI is located in Vasona Lake County Park, at 296 Garden Hill Drive, Los Gatos. YSI also has facilities in Sanborn-Skyline Park in Saratoga. For more information, call 356-4945.
