Pins help Warriors tie Leland

By Dick Sparrer

Pins can mean the difference between victory and defeat in a wrestling match.

And they did last week for the Westmont wrestling team--because six pins helped the Warriors to a 38-38 tie against Leland in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Westmont won seven matches, five of them by pin, to pull out a team tie against the Chargers.

Luong Vuong started Westmont off with a second-round fall at 103 pounds, and John Fernandez pinned with a second left in the second round at 135 pounds for the Warriors.

Senior sensation Tim Heinrich won by fall at 3:01 of the second round at 152 pounds for the Warriors, and Jeff Innamorato pinned at 1:23 of the first round at 171.

Phat Dinh pulled out a 16-9 win at 119 pounds; Andrew Wadler nailed a 19-2 victory at 160 for Westmont.

The Warriors came back with a solid finish at the Jim Root Classic wrestling tournament at West Valley Community College last weekend.

Heinrich and Dinh each made it to the finals, but lost there to wind up with seconds. Heinrich was second at 152, and Dinh added a second at 112 to lead Westmont to a team 10th.

Saratoga's Paul Kim was fifth at 145 pounds; John Follmar was sixth at 125; Lynbrook's Paul Choi came through with a fourth at 112 pounds.
