Whitnack is MVP
Alana Whitnack of De Anza Community College was named the most valuable player, and Carol Knight of West Valley Community College was picked the coach of the year when the Coast Conference selected its South Division all-conference women's volleyball team this past season.
Whitnack was joined on the all-conference team by Stephanie Burch, Katrina Saiia and Jennifer Lloyd of De Anza.
Members of Knight's West Valley team picked to the all-conference squad were Kristin Robertshaw, Tara Robnett, Michelle Louie and Christina Macrenaris.
Naia Atuatasi of Monterey, Andrea Calderon and Jeanna Lyon of Hartnell and Jennifer Brose, Katie Roberts and Ashley Pritchard of Cabrillo round out the squad.
Vikings win big
Five players scored in double figures to lead the West Valley Community College men's basketball team to a lopsided 79-60 win over Ohlone in Coast Conference North play last week.
James Holmes and Taplar Mvogo pumped in 15 points apiece to lead the Vikings to the lopsided victory. Toby Vares supported with 14 points, Scott Reeves had 13 and Darrell Teat added 12 for West Valley. Reeves and Vares each buried three three-pointers.
Derek Mickle and Robert Taylor each popped a three and finished with five points apiece for the Vikings.
West Valley improved to 16-4 for the year and is 1-0 in conference play. The Vikings will be on the road this week to visit Chabot on Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m., and Foothill on Jan. 24, 8 p.m.
Youth Football
The 1996 Pop Warner Football season may have just ended, but the local organization is trying to getting a quick start on the 1997 campaign.
The Los Gatos Pop Warner group is looking for qualified adults (over the age of 18) interested in coaching football and cheer squads for the '97 season.
