Letters
Questions need to beanswered about bond
Like most residents of Saratoga, I recently received a letter from the Friends of Saratoga Schools asking for support in the upcoming Measure L campaign. The letter contains a list of Measure L projects for our review:
* Seismic upgrades.
* Providing adequate electrical service and lighting for classrooms.
* Removing remaining asbestos.
* Repairing leaky roofs and damaged ceilings.
* Replacing defective plumbing.
* Repairing old student bathrooms, including new toilets, sinks and urinals.
* Renovating classrooms.
* Replacement of antiquated heating and ventilation systems.
* Enlarging and upgrading school libraries.
* Adding classrooms.
Oops, that's the list of projects we were promised nearly five years ago with the Measure D bond. (Yes, I actually saved the Measure D propaganda.) As I look at the list, I wonder why the vast majority of improvements have not been made to our schools while we have new multipurpose rooms and administration buildings that were not mentioned in the literature
We've heard lots of excuses about rising construction costs, yet we didn't get even the basic improvements promised.
As I look toward the Measure L bond issue before us, I have to wonder if we really will get what we are promised. I call on the Measure L committee and the SUSD school board to publish the detailed master plan for each school, outlining precisely what we will get for our hard-earned tax dollars, not a high-level list for which no one can be held accountable.
Short of that, I most certainly will not support another bond measure.
