    Owens heads college board

Nancy Rucker, 2001 president of the West Valley-Mission Community College District Board of Trustees, turned over the gavel Dec. 13 to Trustee Robert T. Owens. Owens will serve as president, and Trustee Chris Constantin will serve as vice president of the board in 2002.

Owens, a Santa Clara resident, is a retired attorney who worked as a deputy Santa Clara County counsel for 19 years. He graduated Santa Clara University with degrees in law and civil engineering, and now lectures at the university in the graduate education administration program.

City backs Yes on Prop 42 campaign

City council members have unanimously agreed to back the passage of Proposition 42, a statewide transportation act that will appear on the March 5, ballot.

The ballot measure deals with money collected in California from the sale of gasoline. Currently, gas taxes go into the state's general fund and most are redistributed to local and regional jurisdictions for use in transportation projects. Saratoga expected to receive around $630,00 in gas tax money this year. That money goes into a street and road repair fund.

Prop 42 would nail down the distribution of gas tax funds by the year 2008-9. Forty percent of the expected $1.4 billion in gas tax money that year will go to cities and counties, 20 percent to public transit agencies and 40 percent will be earmarked for special projects, including local improvements.

For more information on the campaign the city is backing, see www.yesprop42.com.

    Traffic safety grants available

The Traffic Safe Communities Network, a coalition of Santa Clara County health and hospital officials, is sponsoring 20 grants of $25,000 each for community-based efforts to reduce traffic-related injuries, fatalities and health care costs in the region. Projects must address one of six areas--alcohol and impaired driving, bicycle safety, child passenger safety, data and analysis activities, pedestrian safety, or red light running/aggressive driving.
