Mary Jean Dines
Mary Jean Dines died Jan. 1 in her Saratoga home at the age of 73.
Although born in a log cabin in Alaska, Dines spent the majority of her life in California. She was an active member of Eastfield Ming Quong and served as president of Happy Dragon Thrift Store in Los Gatos for two years. She also enjoyed hiking in Yosemite National Park for more than 50 years.
Dines was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Thomas Robert Dines. Survivors include daughters Kim Dines and Lori Dines Haapanen; son Paul Dines; grandchildren Britney and Krista Haapanen and Thomas and Juliana Dines; sister Letitia Sutton and many cousins and friends.
Memorial services have been held.
Dr. James Brown
Dr. James L. Brown of Saratoga died Dec. 12 after a six-year battle with lymphocytic leukemia. He was 76.
Born June 25, 1925, in St. Paul, Minn., Brown attended the University of Louisville in the first class of the U.S. Navy's V-12 program to educate physicians during World War II. After obtaining his bachelor's degree and completing a year of medical school, also in Louisville, he transferred to the University of Minnesota, where he graduated in 1949.
Brown served for two years with the U.S. Air Force in Korea and Japan during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. He then completed a medical internship at Highland Hospital in Oakland and worked as a medical resident, research fellow and instructor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. He later served as chief of cardiology at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Minneapolis.
In 1961, Brown opened a private practice in San Jose and was associated with O'Connor Hospital for more than 30 years. He was among the South Bay's first cardiologists to perform balloon angioplasty and echocardiography. He retired in 1993.
Brown belonged to the Santa Clara County Medical Society, California Medical Association, American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American College of Cardiologists, Society of Internal Medicine and American College of Physicians.
In his free time, he enjoyed jazz music, cooking and Civil War and World War II history. He was a member of the Friends of the Saratoga Library, served on the medical committee at the Saratoga Senior Center and belonged to the Saratoga Music Boosters while his daughter was attending Saratoga High School. Brown also served on the 1998 Federal Grand Jury and the 1999-2000 Santa Clara County Grand Jury.
Survivors include wife Merilyn Brown of Saratoga; sons Jim Brown of Sacramento and Dave Brown of Arcata; daughter Lisa Brown of Bethlehem, N.H.; and brother John Brown of Bozeman, Mont.
Memorial services have been held. Donations can be made to the Leukemia Society of America or the American Heart Association.
