    Redwood School Ribbon Cutting

Redwood Middle School will hold a public ribbon cutting for the school's modernization and safety project on Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. in front of the library facing Fruitvale Avenue.

The school has a new library, a new media center and new science, language and computer classrooms. The school also has a refurbished multipurpose room with added space for physical education, as well as a drama and chorale room. The gym, kitchen and band room have been remodeled and technology, lighting and heating systems have been updated.

The ribbon cutting is a way for the school to showcase its new areas to the public, according to Mary Gardner, superintendent of the Saratoga Union School District. The event will include refreshments, music and special guests.

    Church gets new office

The Church of the Ascension at 12033 Miller Ave. had its new parish office approved by the Saratoga Planning Commission Jan. 10.

The project entails demolishing the existing parish office building, which is 2,568 square feet and building an approximately 3,000-square-foot building in its place. Both the existing and the planned structures are one story. The project also entails the addition of six new parking places to the church office parking area.

The commission also approved the use of two modular buildings for office space during construction located to the south of the church sanctuary, 45 feet from Ascension Drive.

    Firefighters give to burn foundation

Union firefighters in both the Saratoga Fire District and the Santa Clara County Fire Department collected raised $400 by selling food at their booth at the Celebrate Saratoga! street dance in September. They plan to donate the money to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to burn prevention and survivor assistance, according to SFD firefighter Berk Gilson.

Eight-year-old Ruch was fatally burned in a backyard barbecue accident, and the foundation was founded in her name in 1971. It works to develop prevention materials, programs and services.
