Montalvo to honor prize-winning poets

Winners of Villa Montalvo's Biennial Poetry Competition will read their winning entries at an awards ceremony and reception Feb. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Villa Montalvo.

The 1995 poetry contest, part of Montalvo's Literary Arts Program, attracted more than 300 entries from California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada. Eleven prizes were awarded, including first prize to Joseph Millar of Mill Valley; second prize to Erika Nanes of Irvine; and third prize to Molly Fisk of Stinson Beach. The winners will all receive cash prizes, and the first-prize winner will also receive a one-month residency at Villa Montalvo.

Earning honorable mentions were Ryan Iwanaga of Saratoga; Nancy Cherry of Inverness; Fatima Lim-Wilson of Seattle; Amy Rosenthal of San Francisco; Michael Spence of Tukwila, Wash.; Gabriela Spera of Oakland; Melissa S. Stein of Davis; and Robert W. Thomas of South San Francisco.

Garrett Hongo, a published poet currently teaching at the University of Oregon, judged the entries.

The Biennial Poetry Competition is funded by the Phelan Trust of the Community Foundation of Santa Clara County.
