Summit League lecture topic is 'global viruses'

"Global Viruses--The New Mysteries" is the topic of a Feb. 7 lecture, discussion and luncheon presented by the Summit League, a nonprofit community organization dedicated to raising funds to support local groups in the areas of education, health, welfare and the arts.

The program, which benefits the Visiting Nurse Association of Santa Clara County, runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose. Keynote speakers are Drs. William T. Close and Merle A. Sande.

Close is former chief physician of the Congolese Army and personal physician of the president of Zaire; he is also the author of the novel Ebola and the father of actress Glenn Close. Following the program, William Close will sign copies of his book.

Sande, an authority on infectious disease, is chief of medical services and founder of the AIDS program at San Francisco General Hospital.

One student from every high school in Santa Clara County will be able to attend the program for free, thanks to underwriting by the Bryan and Cilker families.

Cost is $55 per person. For reservations or information, call Lorna at 867-1230 or Marilyn at 354-0129.
