Theater was always too hot, too cold, until now

    By Kara Chalmers

By the end of January, performers, audience members, City Council members and city commissioners should be much more comfortable while spending time in the Civic Theater on Allendale Avenue.

The theater's original heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system, which is more than 35 years old, is being replaced. According to Recreation Director Joan Pisani, the old system has been in bad shape for the past few years; it frequently broke down and never worked quite right. After continually repairing the system, the city finally decided a complete replacement would be the most economically efficient solution. Because the new system will be more efficient, the city's electric and gas costs will stay low in the long run, Pisani said.

The construction contract with Redwood General and Mechanical of Redwood City is for $128,952, which comes from the $160,000 allocated in the facility maintenance and building improvements sections of the city's budget.

Work began the second week in December and should be completed by the end of January, Pisani said. She added that, if the work had not been done now, the city would have had to wait a full year because December is the only time of the year that the theater isn't in constant use by performers.

In the meantime, City Council and Planning Commission meetings have been held next door in the Adult Care Center.
