Hwy. 85 report goes before city The Saratoga City Council is scheduled to hear a report on Highway 85 noise and ways it can be decreased at its meeting Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Civic Theater on Fruitvale Avenue. The report will be presented by representatives from Acentech, the noise-reduction consultants retained by Caltrans to study the issue. Acentech Director Ray Nugent said he and one of the other researchers on the project will be on hand to discuss the report and answer councilmembers' questions. Caltrans commissioned the report in March 1996 after residents and Saratoga and Cupertino city officials complained that noise from the highway, which opened in November 1994, was greater than they had expected. BAAQMD seeks board member The board of directors of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is inviting applications from members of the medical profession for a vacancy on the district's hearing board. State law requires that the hearing board have five members--a registered professional engineer, an attorney-at-law, a member of the medical profession and two members of the public. The hearing board is a quasi-judicial body that rules on requests for variances from district regulations, hears appeals of district decisions on permits and issues orders of abatement. The board currently meets once a week, usually on Thursdays, at the district's San Francisco headquarters. For an information packet and application form, call the BAAQMD clerk of the board at 415/749-4961. The deadline for applications is Friday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m.
