Diamondbacks GM guest at Hot Stove Banquet

    By Dick Sparrer

Barry Bonds and Ken Caminiti have each won National League Most Valuable Player awards.

Dave Righetti was an American League Rookie of the Year and Carney Lansford won an AL batting crown.

But winning major awards is not all that the four baseball superstars have in common. They were also each winners of awards presented at the Santa Clara County Baseball Fundraisers Hot Stove Banquet.

The event returns on Feb. 5 when the 18th annual Hot Stove Banquet will be held at the San Jose Elks Club.

The evening begins with no-host cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the awards presentation at 8 p.m. John Shrader of KNBR radio will serve as the master of ceremonies, and Joe Garagiola Jr., the general manager of the World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks, will be the special guest.

The highlight of the night will be the announcement of the Major League Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards. And the winners will be walked in some rather impressive footsteps.

Along with Bonds, Caminiti, Righetti and Lansford, past area winners have included Scott Erickson, Mark Langston, Dan Gladden, Anthony Telford, Dave Steib, Gregg Jefferies, Mike Mussina and Brian Johnson, along with last year's winner Pat Burrell and Rick Helling.

Other awards to be presented at the banquet include: Minor League Player of the Year; Minor League Pitcher of the Year; College Player of the Year; College Pitcher of the Year; Junior College Player of the Year; Junior College Pitcher of the Year; High School Player of the Year; Scout of the Year; Service Award; Loyd Christopher Award; Academic Achievement; and Outstanding Organizations.
