Saratoga's Beth Brandt guides her horse, Ms. Kabaret, over a barrier on her way to the Pacific Coast Horse Shows Association Championship in the Northern California Division of Children's Jumpers.
Brandt rides Ms. Kabaret to title
By Dick Sparrer
When it comes to competition, Beth Brandt and her pal, Ms. Kabaret, don't horse around. Or maybe they do...and they do it quite well.
Brandt, 16, rode her mare, Ms. Kabaret, to the Pacific Coast Horse Shows Association Championship in the Northern California Division of Children's Jumpers.
But that was only the beginning. The Pacific Coast champs went on to win the "Reserve" championship in the state's "A" Division, won the NorCal Hunter Jumper Association Children's Jumper Championship, and finished fourth in Zone 10 of the United States Equestrian Association.
Brandt, the daughter of James and Lynn Stephenson-Brandt of Saratoga, was honored for her equestrian skills earlier this month in Las Vegas.
The Lynbrook High School junior is a second-generation Saratogan and has been riding since she was 9 years old. She trains with Jim and Ann Morgan of "Dreammakers" at Garrod Farms in Saratoga.
Like Beth, Ms. Kabaret--of the Trakehner breed--is a champion. She was bred and raised in Solvang, near Santa Barbara, and was the Horse of the Year in the Children's Jumper Division of the American Trakehner Association in 2001. Brandt won the American Trakehner Association's Samurai Memorial Scholarship that year.
Bowe a triathlete
Saratoga's Kevin Bowe, a graduate of Mitty High School, completed a sensational season of triathlon competition, competing in six events and placing among the leaders in each of them.
Bowe, 20, wrapped up the year by finishing first in his age group (20-24) in the Monterey Bay Challenge Series. He was sixth in the Sandman Triathlon, second in the Monterey Bay event and third in the Santa Cruz Sentinel Triathlon to wrap up the year.
Earlier in the year, he had finished fourth in both the South Bay and San Jose International and seventh in the Wildflower.
Bowe, who ended up 24th overall in the field of 928 athletes at the Sentinel event, is currently competing for the triathlon team at UC-Santa Barbara.
Lambles ranked
Tennis players Kelly and John Lamble of Saratoga are pretty good at what they do, and the Northern California Tennis Association seems to recognize that fact.
The sister and brother from Foothill School are each ranked in their age group on the NCTA charts for the 2001 season.
Kelly Lamble, 10, is ranked No. 1 in the NCTA Girls 10 Open Singles rankings, and John Lamble, 9, is ranked No. 13 in the Boys 10 Open Singles division. John is the highest ranking 9-year-old in the age group.
