    County seeking jury candidates

The Santa Clara County Superior Court is once again seeking volunteers for its 2002-'03 civil grand jury.

As the county's investigative body, the grand jury can examine all aspects of county and city governments and special districts. The jury may also look into conditions in jails and adult and juvenile detention facilities.

Applicants for the jury must be at least 18 years old and have lived in Santa Clara County for at least one year. They must have a sufficient knowledge of English and, according to the court, be in "possession of natural faculties and of sound judgement and fair character." Elected officials are not eligible, nor are those convicted of a felony.

Contact Gloria Alicia Chacon, the grand jury executive assistant, at 408.299.3608.

Chairman wants city to raise roof

Architect and Heritage Preservation Commission Chairman Norman Koepernik told the city council recently that he wanted the limit on roof heights in the city to be raised.

Currently, the height limit is 26 feet in most residential areas. However, Koepernik said on Jan. 22 that many historic homes have roofs that are higher than the city's limit, imposed after the homes were built. In order to allow additions to be consistent with historic designs, Koepernik argued that the height limit should be changed.

Mayor Nick Streit told Koepernik to bring a formal proposal back the city.

    Dave Hernandez chairs Chamber

The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, responsible for promoting business in the city for its members, announced in early January its new board of directors for 2002.

Dave Hernandez, owner of Los Gatos Auto Service, took over as president of the board. John Palladino, an insurance and investment consultant; Connie Palladino, a career consultant; and Jean Orr, of the Colour Shop Draperies and Interiors, joined Pearl Medeiros of Brannon's Party Rentals and travel agent Jean Funari on the Chamber's executive committee.

New board members included Linda Bull, Kindle Smyth, Jerry Venz and Gretchen Walsh.
