    Workshop set at Hakone Gardens

As part of the many classes and programs it offers on arts, culture and wellness, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens presents "Keeping a Sketch Book: Personal Memories" on Feb. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The instructor is Linda Mitchell, a credentialed teacher who also loves to paint and travel. She will demonstrate basic drawing skills for preserving memories from travel, gardening, nature, hobbies or other life experiences. Participants will practice techniques using different mediums.

Cost is $45 for one day or $80 for both days; attending both sessions is recommended. Bring a bag lunch. Hakone Gardens is at 21000 Big Basin Way. For more information, call Mitchell at 831.462.0785 or email her at lindamit1@aol.com.

    Montalvo plans a Valentine ball

Montalvo, Saratoga's multidisciplinary, nonprofit center for the arts, holds its annual Valentine Ball on Feb. 8 from 6 to 11 p.m. The black tie-optional event includes dinner by Patrick David's Catering, a martini bar stocked by The Basin restaurant, dancing to Dave's Li'l Big Band, party favors from Tiffany & Co., a live auction and valet parking.

Proceeds benefit Montalvo's many community programs, including the Arts Education and Outreach Program. Montalvo is at 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga. Tickets are $300 per person. Call 408.961.5800, ext. 876, for tickets or additional information.

    Geologist to share landscape photos

Among the series of programs it offers to the community, REI Saratoga has invited professional photographer and geologist John Karachewski to give a slide show tour of California's landscape on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.

His show includes images of the Sierra Nevada, Cascades, Coast Range, Great Valley and Big Basin areas. He will also discuss how folds, fault lines, glaciers and volcanoes have helped create California's varied geology.

There is no charge to attend the event. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For more information, call 408.871.8765.
