Alfred Glass
Former Los Gatan, the Rev. Alfred G. Glass, died on Jan. 15, in Medford, Ore., where he was living at the time. He was 95.
Born on Jan. 11, 1906, in Montreal, Quebec, Glass moved to San Francisco in 1923 and worked as an accountant before feeling a call to the ministry. He enrolled in the University of Redlands in 1929, from which he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy with a minor in psychology.
He later earned his M.A. and B.D. from Berkeley Baptist Divinity School. In 1938, he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister and also became a naturalized U.S. citizen. His passion for learning led him back to school and at the age of 71 he received a doctor of divinity form San Francisco Theological Seminary.
Over the years, Glass served congregations in Gonzales, San Francisco, Yosemite and Saratoga--the latter at the Saratoga Federated Church. He was also a co-founder of the Center for Human Communication in Los Gatos, where he worked as a marriage and family counselor.
In his spare time, Glass enjoyed skating, skiing, biking, hiking, and hauling and chopping wood. Some of his most memorable trips were burro trips with his family, and hiking trips along the John Muir Trail with his son.
Among his many writings is this quotation his family would like to remember him by: "Go and find enough goodness in others to believe in a world shaped only by love."
Glass was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen. Survivors include wife Francie Glass of Medford, Ore.; daughters Gail Crouch of Seattle, Wash., and Jane Krejci of Monte Sereno; son Gordon Glass of Farmington, N.M.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to the Yosemite Association, P.O. Box 230, El Portal, Calif., 95318, or to the University of Redlands, Redlands, Calif. 92373.
