The Saratoga Bicycle Advisory Committee is considering the development of a multi-use trail on the city's "utility corridor," which cuts diagonally across the city and consists of the Southern Pacific Railroad's and PG&E's rights of way.
Erman Dorsey, senior engineering technician for Saratoga's Public Works Department, said the advisory committee, created by the City Council to develop a bike network plan, is planning preliminary discussions to study the feasibility and availability of funding for the creation of the trail.
The corridor also runs through Cupertino, Campbell and Los Gatos. Bob Kass, public works director for Campbell, said that city has no plans at this time to build a trail along the utility corridor.
However, Dorsey has informally talked with Santa Clara County County planning staff members about the trail, and he said the Santa Clara County Transportation Agency shows the corridor as a future multi-use trail on its maps.
Dorsey said he hoped there could be an agreement between the cities and all affected agencies, and that the county would then take the lead in development.
He stressed that the plans for the multi-use trail, which would also allow for bicycling, are still in the early stages. "Right now, there's nothing other than plans for a future trail," he said.
