Sacred Heart Elementary School in Saratoga is celebrating the 22nd annual Catholic Schools Week from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3, including National Appreciation Day For Catholic Schools on Jan. 31. Both events are sponsored by the National Catholic Education Association.
Sister Aileen Donohue, principal of Sacred Heart, said the school began its celebration with a 9 a.m. liturgy on Sunday, followed by an open house. The school is holding spirit activities throughout the week. The school will celebrate the appreciation day with an awards assembly to honor students.
The theme for the week is "Catholic Schools--Schools You Can Believe In." A spokesperson for the Diocese of San Jose said the celebrations aim to showcase the "quality, values-added education" provided in 8,300 Catholic elementary and secondary schools nationwide.
"We emphasize a good moral life and ethical living while stressing academics," Donohue said.
The Santa Clara Valley has 28 Catholic elementary schools, one Catholic middle school and six Catholic high schools.
