Speaker: Dr. Abraham Twerski
Community lecture focuses on families facing addiction
Dr. Abraham J. Twerski on Feb. 10 will present "Growing Strong Families in the Face of Addiction, Depression and Stress," the second program in this year's Distinguished Lecture Series coordinated by the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning.
Twerski, an ordained rabbi, held a pulpit until 1959, when he graduated from Marquette University Medical School. He completed a psychiatric residency at the University of Pittsburgh Western Psychiatric Institute, then served for 20 years as clinical director for the Department of Psychiatry at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is now an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Twerski also is the founder and medical director emeritus of Gateway Rehabilitation Center, a nonprofit drug and alcohol treatment system cited by Forbes magazine as one of the 12 best centers of its kind in the United States. An international lecturer on the topics of chemical dependency, stress, self-esteem and spirituality, Twerski has written 29 books and appears in eight videos.
Twerski's talk begins at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road, Saratoga.
Next up in the lecture series is Dr. Burt Visotzky on "Sibling Rivalries: Judaism and Christianity in their Formative Years" on March 9, followed by "To Begin Again: Coping with Crisis" by Rabbi Naomi Levy on April 13.
Individual lecture tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for those 30 or younger. Series tickets are $100 for preferred seating at all lectures, $60 standard, $50 for senior citizens and $18 for those 30 and younger. Babysitting is available at lectures with advance reservation. The Los Gatos-based South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning represents San Jose-area Jewish organizations to provide a community structure for adult Jewish education.
