Saratogan starts trip around the world

Nicole Behnke of Saratoga on Jan. 22 will set sail aboard the S.S. Universe Explorer on an around-the-world educational voyage that will take her to such countries as Cuba, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, China and Japan.

Behnke, a 1997 graduate of Saratoga High School and a bilingual education student at the University of San Diego, was selected to participate in the "Semester at Sea" program, an international study program that takes approximately 600 students around the world each semester. Behnke's voyage will end in Seattle on May 20.

    Saratogan selected for commission

Saratogan Cindy Ruby, a member of the Saratoga Union School district board, last month was appointed as a member of countywide Children and Families First Commission. Ruby will represent the West Valley on the nine-member commission, created from the passage of Proposition 10 in 1998.

The commission will create an integrated system of state childhood development services for families with children up to 5 years old. As a result, programs such as prenatal check-ups, immunizations, education, childcare and parenting classes are expected to form in Santa Clara County.
