Good Samaritan Hospital welcomes Senior Friends

Columbia Good Samaritan Hospital encourages all interested local senior citizens to join its chapter of the National Association of Senior Friends, a nonprofit hospital-based health and wellness program open to anyone 50 and older.

The seniors in Good Samaritan's growing group take part in numerous activities, outings and informational programs. Following is a sample of what's available.

The Healthy Heart event on Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Good Sam auditorium features presentations on heart health, nutrition, exercise and stress management. Free samples and heart-healthy refreshments will be served. Blood pressure testing will also be available.

The Lunch Bunch plans mid-day trips to different restaurants every month or so. The next lunch is set for March 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Le Zest restaurant in Campbell.

Seniors in Stride is an ongoing class offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through Good Sam's Cardiac Rehabilitation Department. It includes gentle aerobic activity, stretching, relaxation techniques and exercises that strengthen the upper and lower body.

Other Senior Friends activities include movies, theater performances, health screenings, cooking classes, day trips and several-day tours.

Senior Friends membership is $15 per year. For more information, call 408.559.2555.

Council on Aging seeks Saratoga representative

In cooperation with the city of Saratoga, the Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council is looking for candidates interested in acting as representatives to the Advisory Council of the nonprofit Council on Aging of Santa Clara County.

The mayor of each city within the county is entitled to appoint one senior resident to serve on the Advisory Council. The primary responsibility of the appointee is to serve as a liaison between the city and the council.

Because Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council is so involved in advocating seniors' rights and is the major senior service provider for the city of Saratoga, it has joined in the effort to help recruit a suitable candidate.

The Advisory Council's primary task is to prepare an annual Area Plan for Services to meet the needs of seniors in Santa Clara County. The group also reviews legislation and advocates on behalf of seniors.

For more information, call the Saratoga Adult Care Center at 408.868.1257 or the Council on Aging at 408.296.8290.
