Warriors pin two straight wins
Split for Prospect, despite two Mattson pins
By Dick Sparrer
It was a rocky start for the Westmont wrestling team. The Warriors opened up the dual match season with three straight losses in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. But that was the first three weeks.
Since then, the Warriors have been on a roll.
Westmont pinned back-to-back victories in the division, beating Valley Christian 59-21 and backing that up with a 45-27 victory over Oak Grove last week. Pins by John Baumann and Billy Stouffer sparked the Warriors to the big win over the Eagles last week.
Baumann pinned with just 10 seconds remaining in the first round at 103 pounds for the Warriors, and Stouffer won by fall with 15 seconds left in the first round at 152.
Adam Antolin tossed his opponent around to win 20-4 on a technical fall at 119 pounds, and Juan Jimenez nailed an 11-3 major decision victory at 112.
Garreth Gorman pulled out a tight 14-12 victory at 140 pounds, and Tony Oka added a close 9-8 decision win at 189.
Jason Kennedy (160), Jose Blanco (171) and Dave Horner (heavyweight) were each forfeit winners for Westmont.
The Warriors were coming off a rousing 59-21 victory over Valley Christian. Westmont posted the easy win despite giving up 12 team points with forfeits at 130 and 135.
Oka had the quickest pin of the night for the Warriors when he won by fall at 1:48 of the first round at 171 pounds. L.J. Valcazar was just two seconds off Oka's pace, pinning at 1:50 of the first at 189.
Baumann started things off right with a pin at 4:36 of the third round at 103. After Jimenez won by forfeit at 112, Antolin nailed a lopsided 20-4 technical fall at 119.
Dat Dinh pinned 41 seconds into the second round at 123 and, after the two forfeits and a tough 13-11 loss by Gorman at 140, Dan Ross started a string of five straight pins for the Warriors.
Ross pinned with four seconds left in the second round at 145, Stouffer won by fall at 3:04 of the second round at 152, and Blanco pinned at 2:58 of the second at 160. Oka and Valacazar followed with first round pins to make it five in a row.
Horner finished off Valley Christian with a pin with 30 seconds left to wrestle at 275 pounds.
Panthers split
Josh Mattson pinned twice at 160 pounds, but the Prospect wrestling team could manage just a split in a couple of matches in the West Valley Division of the BVAL over the past two weeks.
Mattson pinned 37 seconds in the third round at 160, and Danny Day pinned at 1:47 of the first round at 125 for Prospect's only wins in a 51-27 team loss to Gunderson.
A week earlier, Mattson had pinned 42 seconds into the second round at 160, and David Ross pinned at 2:59 of the second round at 130 to lead the Panthers to a 41-30 win over San Jose Academy.
Richard Tapia won by technical fall 20-4 at 152 pounds for Prospect. Rocco Lucero knocked off his 140-pound foe 18-11, and David Ashraf won 13-6 at 171.
Ben Jones (152) and Lucero pinned for the Panthers in a 54-24 league loss to Pioneer, and Lucero, Tony Barba (heavyweight) and Jeff Nielsen (189) pinned in a 45-33 loss to Leigh.
Titan Shootout
Daniel Lopez and Andrew Pease must have been worn out after competing in the Titan Shootout wrestling tournament at John F. Kennedy High School in Fremont.
Sure, they each wrestled--and won--four matches at the tournament to claim individual championships. But that wasn't all. They each had to climb the victory stand... twice.
Because not only did Lopez and Pease win titles at the Shootout, they also won outstanding wrestler awards.
Lopez, Willow Glen's talented 114-pounder, won four straight matches to claim the crown in his weight class. He was also named the outstanding wrestler in the lower weights.
Pease, the tough 142-pounder from Los Gatos, also won four bouts to clinch a title in his division. And he was picked as the outstanding wrestler in the middle weights.
Lopez topped a list of six Willow Glen placers as the Rams nailed a team third behind Mt. Pleasant and Los Altos. Los Gatos finished fourth overall with Pease figuring as one of five Wildcats to place.
Mt. Pleasant ran up 139 points to win the team title with Los Altos a close second at 138. Willow Glen was third at 130 with Los Gatos and Mitty sharing fourth with 127 points each. Interestingly, Willow Glen whipped Mt. Pleasant and Los Gatos crushed Los Altos in dual matches within their respective leagues.
Robert Lee and James Rodriguez of Lynbrook won individual championships at the tournament. Lee won a title at 132 pounds for the Vikings and Rodriguez was a champ at 162 for the Vikes.
Wildcat Invitational
Wrestling Results: Team standings and individual placers for the Wildcat Invitational.
Prospect's Rick Schaefers finished third at 173 pounds when Los Gatos hosted the Wildcat Invitational, the top frosh-soph wrestling tournament in the Central Coast Section.
Schaefers was one of just two placers for Prospect in the tournament. Saratoga had one wrestler place in the event.
