Saratoga NewsGorman wins crown, helps Warriors to a tourney titleBy Dick Sparrer Brodie Gorman had a super weekend, and it had nothing at all to do with Sunday's Super Bowl match-up between the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos. No, Gorman's super performance was over long before the Falcons and Broncos took to the field on Sunday afternoon. Gorman came through with an individual championship at 152 pounds to lead Westmont to the team title at the Overfelt Classic wrestling tournament Saturday at the East San Jose school. Westmont rolled up 134 points to win the team championship with Silver Creek a distant second at 116. Gorman topped a list of five Warriors in the Overfelt Classic finals, but he was the only Westmont wrestler to win a title. Gorman pulled out a tight 4-2 victory in his last match to finish first at 152 pounds. Dat Dinh was second at 103, Phat Dinh was second at 130, Tony Oka was second at 171, and Greg Woodland was second at 215 pounds. Jose Blanco was third at 160 pounds for Westmont, and Pham Vo was eighth at 135. Earlier in the week, the Warriors had clinched a thrilling 37-34 win over Valley Christian in a key dual match in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Woodland's pin with 40 seconds left in the first round at 215 pounds secured the team win for the Warriors. Westmont improved to 3-1 in the division with the win. D. Dinh started Westmont off with a pin at 1:15 of the first round at 103 pounds, and Scott Jimenez pinned in the second round at 112. Adam Antolin won by technical fall with a 17-2 decision win at 119, and P. Dinh came through with a 19-4 win for a technical fall at 130. Vo pinned in the second round at 135 pounds, and Oka posted a 9-4 victory at 171. Panthers pin win Pins by Steve Ross, Joey Mannina, Scott Brown, Matt Delorio and freshman Tony Barba helped Prospect roll to a 51-30 win over San Jose Academy in the West Valley Division of the BVAL. The Panthers are now 1-3 in the division and 2-3 for the year. Ross pinned in 35 seconds at 119 pounds, and Mannina pinned in a quick 26 seconds at 145 for the Panthers. Brown (152), Delorio (160) and Barba (heavyweight) each nailed second-round falls. David Lam came through with a 17-13 win in a high-scoring match at 103 pounds for Prospect. Falcons fall Four Saratoga wrestlers nailed victories last week, but the Falcons lost a 48-20 dual match decision to Fremont in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The loss left the Falcons 0-4 in division action. Yuichi Kurosawa, Matt Chaudry, David Azzi and Keith Follmar were each winners for the Falcons in the dual match. Kurosawa rolled to a 21-6 victory at 119 pounds, and Chaudry pinned with 54 seconds remaining in the second round at 125 pounds. Azzi pulled out a 9-3 decision win at 160 pounds, and Follmar won by fall with 17 seconds left in the second round at 171.
