Pioneers sponsor contest

The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County is holding its annual Santa Clara County Historical Essay Contest, in which participants of all ages can win one of six prizes, ranging from $500 for first place to $25 for honorable mention.

Essays, which should be between 3,000 and 10,000 words, may be on any person, place or event concerning Santa Clara County, from its beginnings to the recent past. Each essay should include an introduction or a preface, a table of contents, a bibliography and a list of sources or persons consulted. Writers must include their name, address and phone number on the title page of their essays. Students should also include the name of their school and their homeroom teacher.

The Pioneers reserve exclusive publication rights to all essays.

Winners will receive their awards at a June 6 luncheon, at which time the first three winners will make brief presentations of their essays. Deadline is April 24. For a complete list of rules, call Helen at 578-4485.
