Homeowners: be observant!

As victims of one of the "open garage" burglaries referred to in the Jan. 14 edition of the Saratoga News, we would like to acknowledge the importance of neighborhood vigilance. The efficiency of the officers of the Westside Substation who apprehended the suspects was completely unexpected, and the return of our stolen items was even more amazing.

In mid-afternoon, we left our garage to go indoors for only a few minutes, so take care and beware! We would like to encourage homeowners to record license numbers and to report suspicious activities immediately so that police investigation can determine whether a crime has been committed or there is a legitimate reason for an unfamiliar person or vehicle. Time may be of the essence, as in this case.

Many thanks to the deputies who were so timely, professional and efficient.

Speedwagon reference misses the rail mark

In reference to the Taste column in the Jan 7 issue of the Saratoga News, the folks at Eric's Delicafe may think that "REO Speedwagon" means something special to rail fans, but as a rail fan (junior grade) myself, it doesn't hit me that way at all.

Other than the obvious connection to a '70s band, the image it conjures up in my mind is of a truck, manufactured by the company that Ransom E. Olds founded after he sold Oldsmobile to General Motors. He couldn't very well call it an "OldsWagon," lest he feel the wrath of GM's lawyers.

For similar reasons, Albert Champion started A.C. after selling Champion, and, more recently, Alan Shugart started Seagate.

GGG encourages city attendance

The Saratoga Good Government Group encourages Saratogans to attend the Feb. 4 meeting of the City Council in the Civic Theater at 7: 30 p.m. The agenda includes a discussion on noise abatement on Highway 85. GGG recently heard a presentation from George Korbay, chairman of the Freeway Noise Abatement Committee. Mr. Korbay discussed the noise-reduction options contained in the report submitted by Acentech, the consulting firm retained by Caltrans.

GGG supports the option to repave the freeway in Saratoga. Consideration of how the repaving would be funded and what measures are necessary to implement this option will be discussed.
