Saratoga NewsOn CampusRedwood students excel in math test Of the 18 Redwood Middle School students who participated in the Algebra 1 Golden State Math Exam last spring, 36 percent scored in the "high honors" category, ranking them among the top 7 percent in the state for students who took the test. The recently released figures also showed that another 30 percent of Redwoods' students placed in the "honors" category, placing them within the top 16 percent of test-takers. Five of the students now attend Saratoga High School, and the rest are now in the eighth-grade class at Redwood. Statewide poster contest begins The California Poison Control System (CPCS) recently announced its first-ever statewide poster contest to teach kids about poison prevention. Children ages 5 to 18 are encouraged to enter the contest by the Feb. 23 deadline. More than 2,000 pharmacies, including Safeway and Longs Drugs, are participating in the contest. Contestants are encouraged to submit bold, bright posters that illustrate the theme "Children Act Fast, So Do Poisons." Artwork must be on either 11-by-17-inch or 12-by-18-inch white poster paper using watercolor, acrylic or crayon. Entries will be judged in three age categories: 5-11, 12-14 and 15-18 years. Each category will have three winners, with gift certificate prizes of $200, $100 and $50, respectively. Entry forms are available at local participating pharmacies. Grants awarded to McAuliffe School Christa McAuliffe School recently received nearly $7,000 in Cupertino Education Endowment Foundation teacher-initiated grants. The 1997 grants include the Pottery of the World program, Hands on Science--Minds on Reading, and Math Games: Strategies to Enhance Mental Computation Skills. Grants are awarded by the CEEF in an effort to support teacher interest in beginning new projects. A total of 150 teachers received $275,000 through the grant program in 1997.
