Indian actors stage play at West Valley

Along with technological and scientific advances, modern life brought a singular contribution to the human labor process: the 9-to-5 office clerk, equipped with a typewriter and a colossal tolerance for monotony.

This bureaucratic phenomenon is explored in Aath Ghante ("Eight Hours"), a production by Naatak, the Bay Area's Indian theatre group. Naatak was founded by graduate students Saraf and Sanjay Rajagopalan to provide thought-provoking, socially relevant Indian theatre to the Bay Area.

Aath Ghante is written by members of Naatak and partly inspired by American plays like Love Letters. The play is set against four decades of Delhi's history. The play will be staged at West Valley College Theater, 14000 Fruitvale Ave., on Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 general, $8 students.

LWV cosponsors population talk

Marilyn S. Hempel, executive director of the Population Coalition, will speak on "Two's Company, 5.8 Billion's a Crowd: Building Sustainable Communities" during a seminar at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 on Hewlett-Packard's Santa Clara campus, building 50, Stevens Creek Blvd. and Lawrence Expressway.

Partnering with the League of Women Voters of Los Gatos, Saratoga, Monte Sereno is Zero Population Growth, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara chapters; the League of Women Voters of Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara Los Altos-Mountain View, and Cupertino-Sunnyvale; and the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club. San Jose City Councilmember Trixie Johnson will introduce the speaker.

Hempel will address the impact of an increased population on the economy, environment and social services. There also will be audience participation. According to Hempel, "no matter what your cause, it's a lost cause if we don't come to grips with overpopulation." Having lived and worked in developing nations and studied population issues for many years, she says that the interactive problems of overconsumption and overpopulation must be addressed in industrial and developing nations alike.

The public is invited. For information, contact Fran Krezek, 867-1029.
