Walks explore Saratoga history
Volunteer-led history walks begin April 6 and continue on the first Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. Participants should meet at the Saratoga Historical Museum, 20450 Saratoga-Los Gatos Road.
Linda and Ron Hagelin will lead the first walk, traveling up Oak Street to view some of that street's historic houses, to Madronia Cemetery to view historic graves and down Big Basin Way, visiting a house that was once a stage stop. To arrange a special tour, call 867-4311.
Spay Day at the Humane Society
Bring on the boys! The boy cats, that is. The Humane Society of Santa Clara County will be holding its first Male Cat Extravaganza, in conjunction with Spay Day USA, on Sat., Feb. 22. The first 350 unaltered male cats registered at the extravaganza will be neutered for only $5 per cat.
The day is made possible through the cooperation of the Humane Society, local veterinarians and animal welfare groups in Santa Clara County and plays an important part in helping fight pet overpopulation.
For more information, call the Humane Society's "Bring Us Your Boys" hot line at 727-3383.
Scientist explores the world of bats
"The World of Bats" will be the topic of a slide show and hands-on demonstration, including a live bat, by David Johnston, a biologist and former Youth Science Institute director.
Johnston is now teaching international health programs at UC-Santa Cruz and consulting in the wildlife field. The program will be presented by the Loma Prieta Chapter/ Guadalupe Group of the Sierra Club at 7:30 p.m. Tues., Feb. 18, in the Saratoga Library, on the corner of Saratoga and Fruitvale avenues.
Citizens needed as tax watchdogs
The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is seeking volunteers to serve on a Citizens Watchdog Committee which will review the expenditure of funds from Measure B, the new half-cent sales tax.
Measure B, approved by Santa Clara County voters last November, authorized this half-cent sales tax for general purposes and created the committee to review all disbursements of the tax revenue. The independent committee must include 10 members selected at large from the five supervisorial districts.
Application forms are available from the County Clerk, 70 West Hedding St., San Jose.
