Student poets, artists, photographers, dancers and musicians in Santa Clara County are invited to enter the Olympiad of the Arts Competition, sponsored by the West Valley/Mission Colleges Foundation and supported by the Saratoga Rotary Art Show.
The Olympiad of the Arts is a competition in acting performance, dance, vocal and piano music, photography, poetry, short stories and visual arts held annually for student artists. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and stimulate creativity by promoting and rewarding excellence in the arts, according to Mary Fleischli, executive director. To be eligible, entrants must be enrolled in high school or college within Santa Clara County.
Cash awards for the high school competition total some $3,000, and the college winners will share a total of $4,000. Honorable mentions also will be given.
The entry deadlines are the following: acting, March 14; dance, March 3; music, March 21; photography, April 15; poetry and short stories, March 31; visual arts--college, April 22; visual arts--high school, April 2. Entry fees range from $1 to $5.
Photography entries will be exhibited at the Montalvo Art Gallery, where a reception for the artists will be held April 17. High school visual arts entries will be on exhibit in the West Valley College Art Gallery, with a reception for the artists on April 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. College visual arts entries will be on view at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, where a reception for the artists will be held April 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. Winning entries in the literary arts will be published and open auditions will be held in the music and dance categories.
The awards ceremony will be held at West Valley College on Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. in the West Valley College Theatre in conjunction with the Saratoga Rotary Art Show.
