Saratoga girls are unbeaten

The Saratoga girls' soccer team found an opponent it just couldn't defeat.

Oh, not in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Falcons are still unbeaten in league play. No, this opponent was Mother Nature, and she washed away three Saratoga games a couple of weeks back.

But the Falcons returned to their winning form last week when they blasted Fremont 6-0 before battling Santa Clara to a scoreless tie.

The win and tie helped Saratoga improve to 4-0-2 in division play and to 6-3-3 for the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Moore upped her season total to seven shutouts by blanking both opponents last week. She helped Saratoga stretch its unbeaten string to nine games.

Team scoring leader Lisa Kalmus (five goals, one assist) continued to lead the offensive attack for the Falcons. The freshman came through with a goal and an assist to spark Saratoga to the 6-0 win over the Firebirds.

Freshman Mary Moran came through with a goal and two assists for the winners. Brie Wilson, Ashlee Zimmer, Kristen Fellner and Allison Schraga also scored goals for the Falcons and Courtney Williams, Erin Marsh and Maren Hanssen handed out assists.

In other local girls' soccer action, Kristel Munch knocked in two goals and dished off an assist to lead Prospect to a 3-2 win over Del Mar in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Brianne Copes supported with a goal and an assist for the Panthers in the win.

The Panthers also blanked Willow Glen 2-0 for a division win. Munch scored off a Lyndsay Spanek assist, and Ashley Bulik scored off a Munch assist for Prospect.

Prospect came back to fight Lincoln to a scoreless tie later in the week. The Panthers are now 6-2-2 in league play and 11-3-4 for the year.

Westmont slipped to 2-5-2 in the division and 4-7-4 for the year after falling 5-2 to Del Mar and tying Overfelt 1-1.

Senior Rita Salgado knocked in the lone Westmont goal against the Royals, and Salgado and Gina Sanfilippo each scored goals in the loss to the Dons.

In boys' soccer action, Saratoga won a pair of games and tied one last week to jump to 5-1-2 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL and to 9-2-3 for the season.

David Goni knocked in a goal to spark the Falcons to a 1-0 win over Fremont to open the week.

Two goals each by Jeff Sternberg and Eric Fanali helped the Falcons to a 5-1 win over Wilcox. Jordan Jones added a goal and an assist.

Sandwiched between the two Saratoga victories was a 1-1 tie with Santa Clara.

In other action, Prospect battled Pioneer to a scoreless tie in a key match-up in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL. The Panthers are now 5-1-1 in the division (their only loss a forfeit to Santa Teresa) and 10-3-2 for the year.

Westmont dropped a 2-0 decision to Yerba Buena to slip to 1-5-1 in the West Valley Division of the BVAL. The Warriors are 1-11-1 for the year.
